Program Notes

"Lopside" is a percussion quartet inspired by the music and animation of Felix Colgrave, specifically his short film "DONKS." Colgrave's works play with syncopated percussion rhythms syncing up with the actions happening on screen, heightening both the visual and audio experience. "Lopside" seeks to take this concept and structure it to create a live acoustic piece, which represents a large rusty machine. It isn't afraid to sound ridiculous, with sounds like glissandi on timpani, ratchet, and vibraslap, while aiming for a mechanical, steampunk sound with the china cymbal and break drum. The piece concludes with the machine falling apart, as players are instructed to play wildly, until the machine is no more.
