Scylla details the arduous journey of Aeneas and his band of Trojan refugees as they flee their homeland after the Trojan War. The piece incorporates imagery of the many happenings during this journey, such as Aeneas’ love with Dido, his journey to the land of the dead to find his father, and his men being turned into pigs. But the piece focuses on his encounter with its namesake, Scylla, a beast with the top half of a beautiful woman and the bottom half of a ferocious monster. Many might take these recounts as nothing but folklore, which the piece communicates with its jaunty and humorous movements, but assures that this is no mere story by revealing the true appearance of these ancient monsters in its final push.
